What a market needs

Not every market can support a successor. These four conditions have to hold first, and beauty is the market that had them all, which is why Utopia exists.

    An institution sells the judgment

    A retailer, certifier or ratings body sits between people and a decision they cannot check on their own, and its authority comes from that distance.

    Its power depends on hoarding

    The incumbent cannot publish its methods, its evidence or its failures without destroying its own business model, so the judgment stays locked inside.

    The judgment no longer needs them

    The raw material already sits in public trials, filings and registries, and software can now do the assembling that used to take the institution's whole headcount. Anyone willing to work openly can produce a better judgment than the one being sold.

    People are ready to leave

    Trust has already moved from logos to people, so nobody needs convincing that the old thing failed. A successor that shows its reasoning meets an audience that was only staying for lack of an alternative.
